VTPHNA submission (2025): Parliament of Australia Inquiry into the Health Impacts of Alcohol and Other Drugs in Australia

PHNs hold responsibility for planning, designing, and commissioning various AOD services within their catchments, informed by specific schedules provided by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

In various instances PHNs also commission services and support responses for AOD issues through additional schedules and activities such as First Nations social and emotional wellbeing programs.

PHNs also hold a significant role in supporting primary care to build capacity to support the needs of their communities, such as supporting general practice and community pharmacists to be trained in the legislative requirements and skills to prescribe and dispense pharmacotherapy for opioid dependence, and better integrating AOD support services with GPs.

This VTPHNA submission highlights issues and lessons specific to the Victorian and Tasmanian PHN context of planning, designing and commissioning alcohol and other drugs initiatives.
